The inspiration for The Tab came from the historical and culturally significant temples of Bishnupur and the artistic campus of Shantiniketan. Prashant Sutaria, the visionary architect behind this project, aimed to create a modernist structure that pays homage to the region's heritage. The result is a stunning building that combines traditional art forms with cutting-edge design.
One of the standout features of The Tab is its use of terracotta on the facade, a nod to the rich tradition of terracotta art in the area. The lower part of the eastern face is adorned with verses from Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore's iconic collection of poems, "Gitanjali." This integration of art and literature adds a unique touch to the building, making it a true masterpiece.
Not only is The Tab visually striking, but it also boasts several unique properties. The project has obtained the prestigious IGBC Platinum Rating in the core and shell category, highlighting its commitment to sustainable design. Located in the heart of Durgapur, this landmark building is a result of a successful public-private partnership with the government of West Bengal.
The realization of The Tab involved a combination of traditional and modern construction techniques. The building features a conventional RCC frame structure with a raft foundation, ensuring stability in the unique soil conditions of the area. Additionally, a second skin of fiber cement board and Coreten steel was used to enhance the facade's aesthetics and durability.
The Tab's design specifications posed several challenges that the team successfully overcame. The presence of overhead city power transmission lines required innovative underground adjustments to accommodate them. The stringent building bye laws and limited space called for creative solutions to incorporate essential facilities such as water tanks, STPs, and backup generators.
The Tab is not just a building; it is an interactive space that caters to various end users. From the occupants of the five-star hotel to office goers, retailers, and visitors to the city center, each user group has been carefully planned for, ensuring a unique and functional experience for all.
The project, which started in September 2014, was completed in September 2018. Extensive research was conducted, including study tours of Bishnupur temples, Shantiniketan, and the tribal area of Purulia. Artists from Shantiniketan were involved in creating stainless steel sculptures, bronze statues, and other artworks, further enriching the cultural significance of The Tab.
The Tab has received widespread recognition and acclaim. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2020, a prestigious honor that celebrates well-designed, practical, and innovative creations. This architectural marvel stands as a testament to the seamless integration of art, culture, and modern design.
